We had a heck of a party here in Iowa City saturday night, with
DJ T1000(detroit) and Davey Dave(Chicago) headlining.
In Detroit, you've got the famous warehouse parties, but in Iowa
City, the big parties happen in Old Brick, a 120 year old church
that's on the national historic register.
I showed up about 11 and the place was bouncing to House. A little
on the cheesy side, but this is Iowa -- basically a far west
suburb of Chicago. Play nonstop house here and they'll follow you
anywhere.
T-1000 played a BURNING set of minimal techno. A lot of the crowd
was sitting down at that point but the hardcore were going strong.
AO thought the crowd was kind of dead, but this is Iowa, and the
parties tend to peak early -- at 12:30, local hero Tim was spinning
and people were hooting and hollering. By the time Alan came
on all of the blunts and 40's that had been consumed had taken their
toll, and only the hardcore were still on their feet. AO responded
by pumping the hell out of the tables to try and get them back up,
which was great for me and the rest of the faithful, but ultimately
couldn't wake the dead.
Another Detroit DJ preceded him, whose name I didn't catch, and he
got in on more of the peak of the crowd and worked it like a mother
with long fader buildups.
And breakdancing? WTF? When did breakdancing start happening again,
and why are they breakdancing to house music? I have to admire the
kids who try it -- the new style combines some of the old moves along
with the more modern style of raver shuffling. But to me breakdancing
was what I saw on the streets of Chicago and Paris in the early 80's,
and these new kids got a ways to go.
I took Dave out to grab some coffee about 2AM, and the sight and sound
of that old church booming away with was really something. The strobe
lights flashing through the stain glass windows looked like someone was
arc welding within.
I wasn't able to make it through Dave's set (he came on at 4 AM) but
the best way to describe his style is smooth mixing of NON-cheesy house --
house on the experimental tip. Highly, HIGHLY recommended if you get
the chance to see him spin -- they'd be ripping this boy's clothes off
if he was spinning in the UK.
At any rate, I've got huge respect for Matt Fountain for putting this
event together, and hope that it's success means that more parties like
this will be happening soon.
And a message to Alan -- I did make it to teach Sunday School, though
my ears were ringing a bit -- the lesson was on Martin Luther King.
